The Last Of The Freshers.

It’s been three years since Spark Productions premiered at the Duiske Inn in August 2011. We debuted with an original by the name of ‘One For The Road’ written by Adrian Kavanagh. As we look back from where we began and to where we are now there is a feeling of happiness and shock. If you had told us three years ago that we would eventually go on to create a youth theatre, go to Finland, provide young people with  workshops and see more development go on with all the Sparks, we wouldn’t have believed you, but yet here we are.

A lot of things have changed, we now have a whole team of people working at various levels and areas to help work on creating a better company.  We are very proud of this bunch of young go getters, and its been amazing to see us all develop so much.

We are now approaching what is to be our sixth show, mad right? With Project Y.E.S a initiative from Kilkenny Leader Partnership which has us in a year long development and mentorship programme with Devious Theatre one of the developments was to bring back ‘One For The Road’, back to where we began.

There he is(far right) thinking, ‘why did I write that line?’

As part of developing the writing of Spark’s, Adrian Kavanagh wanted and jumped at the opportunity to re-develop this original comedy about a group of Fresher students on a night out before their exams begin.

He said’s ‘I never felt like the story was finished, that there was more to be said or could be done, there was even an idea for a sequel, called 21 kisses, but it wasn’t necessary. I always wanted to re-do it, and here was my chance’. ‘

Over the past few months he has been working away on the script with the help of John Morton, writer of plays such as War of Attrition &  Scratcher.

We are delighted we have had this critically acclaimed writer to work with us on the re-development of this script and Adrian has learned a lot from the development.

So what can we say about the new show, well for starters it has a new name, along with a new soundtrack. The story and the premise of the original is still there but it has changed.

We also see a fantastic new cast along with two of the originals, Ollie Kelly, Anne-Marie O’Brien, Denise Murphy, Adrian Kavanagh, Rebecca O’Dwyer, John Sweeney, Gary MacDonald, Kelly-Ann Whelan & Maree Moloney.

And of course behind the scenes we have the old reliables, Thomas Drennan as producer, Shannon Keegan as assistant director & Aoife Jordan as photographer and assistant producer.

All in all we are looking forward to a summer of rehearsals & fun. It’s been a while see we have produced an original work and this has us fierce excited, we hope you are too.

The Last Of The Freshers By Adrian Kavanagh hits the stage in August 2014.
